Seat belts required in backseat of vehicles in NYS now

On Tuesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation requiring passengers over 16 to wear a seatbelt in the back seat of vehicles.

The legislation was first proposed in February, and approved by the legislature two months later.

“We’ve known for decades that seat belts save lives and with this measure we are further strengthening our laws and helping to prevent needless tragedies,” Cuomo said.

New York was the first state to mandate seat belts in 1984.
