Tops Friendly Markets is phasing out plastic shopping bags.
While New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officials said a few weeks ago that it wouldn’t be enforcing the plastic bag ban instituted earlier this year anytime soon – the company has taken the step to cease use.
The chain said that all New York stores will stop offering plastic bags on Monday.
The 99 cent reusable bags will be available for customers to buy. Paper bags will be 5 cents each.
State officials said that stores and shoppers would be given at least 30 days notice before the plastic bag ban would be enforced.
