High speed chase called off in Ontario County, but suspect taken into custody in Geneva

Deputies say a Clifton Springs man was arrested on a number of charges following a pursuit in Ontario County.

Deputies say Matthew Canales, 22, was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle after he was observed in a stolen Honda Civic on Melvin Hill Road.

That vehicle had been reported stolen on May 27th from Florida. Deputies say Canales accelerated to speeds in excess of 90 mph and passed another vehicle in a no passing zone as the road curves near County Road 4.

Due to deputies ability to identify Canales as the operator – deputies called off the pursuit. Shortly thereafter, both the vehicle and Canales were located in the Walmart parking lot in Geneva. He was also ticketed for speeding, operating an unregistered vehicle, passing unsafely, and operating on a suspended license.

He was taken to CAP court for arraignment.

Deputies say no injuries were reported as result of the incident.
