JCPenney at Fingerlakes Mall, Destiny USA will shut down

Several JCPenney stores will be shutting down as part of the company’s bankruptcy plans.

Local stores will be impacted.

The JCPenney at the Fingerlakes Mall, which was one of the shopping center’s original tenants will be among those shut down. The Canandaigua location will also be closed, which is one of the few sites in the chain that operate outside traditional mall spaces.

Surprisingly, the location at Destiny USA, one of the region’s destination shopping spots will also close.

The company announced on Thursday that a total of 154 stores would be shut down as part of the bankruptcy plan.

“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” said CEO Jill Soltau in a press release.

“I am incredibly grateful to our talented associates for their ongoing dedication and their passion for meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations during this difficult and uncertain time. All impacted associates will be treated with the utmost consideration and respect,” she added.

The closures are expected to take approximately 3-4 months to fully-implement.
