The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office says it’s going to crack down on trespassing along the Finger Lakes Rail line in the village of Cayuga.
Deputies say they will be patrolling the area of Cayuga Rail Bridge, which is also known as Silver Bridge, and other railroad property in the village of Cayuga.
Violators will be charged.
Sheriff Brian Schencks says this is an annual problem that arises in the spring. They key is getting ahead of it, he notes.
“What concerns me more this year is the speed of the trains,” he said. Speed of trains has been increased from 10 mph to 25 mph. The combination of that stretch of track being narrow, along with increased speeds – could result in serious injury.
Sheriff Schenck says trespassing on railroad property is a crime that is punishable by a fine or jail time.
