Officials concerned that social distancing could be ignored due to nice weather

As the weather gets warmer – will residents continue to adhere to social distancing guidelines?

That has been the big question for weeks.

Dr. Emil Lesho at Rochester Regional Hospital is a little concerned. She says the number of people who are ignoring the masking rules are also a concern.

“I think it’s concerning because COVID-19 is still prevalent in the community and most we have not been able to determine how many people have been exposed to it,” Dr. Lesho told RochesterFirst.com. “But our guess is that most people have not been exposed to it, therefore are especially vulnerable to it.”

She noted that the increase in number of confirmed cases is more likely a reflection of increased testing, rather than a direct connection to how many people are adhering to social distancing.

Bob Duffy, who was chosen to lead the effort in the Finger Lakes, could be at risk of taking a step backwards if people don’t adhere to social distancing measures.

“The issue that came up yesterday with local leaders is that they were seeing gatherings of people without any kind of face covering in a close proximity,” Duffy told RochesterFirst.com. “If infections go up and if people don’t really adhere to social distancing ,we do not want to see a spike in infection.”
