No date to reopen region’s canals, as NYS remains silent on process

Lawmakers from around Upstate New York are pushing for the New York State Canal Corp. to reopen.

No date has been announced to reopen the canal system, which includes the Erie Canal.

Lawmakers say not reopening the canals will cause even more economic hurt on communities that will have a difficult time recovering from the pandemic whenever that ends.

State Senator Robert Ortt and Assemblyman Steve Hawley, along with 18 other state legislators, sent a letter demanding a date be set, according to News10NBC.

The Canal Corp. has not responded.

Regional economies are expected to begin reopening this week, and boating has been deemed a ‘safe’ activity under state guidance.
