The Victor Town Board, led by Supervisor Jack Marren, has moved to suspend all parks and recreation programming and to close the town’s department effective Tuesday.
The action was taken because of the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and looming concerns about budgeting moving forward.
Marren called it an ‘extremely difficult’ decision, as four full-time employees were furloughed. Another part-time employee was laid off.
Marren estimated that the loss would be approximately $2.5 million, a significant amount for any municipal budget. The cause is sales tax, or the loss of it from the closure of businesses across New York.
“There are a number of things playing into this,” Marren added. “It’s tough.”
