Governor Andrew Cuomo says he won’t sign a budget for the upcoming year unless there are changes made to the law that he pushed through in 2019.
The law eliminated cash bail for most misdemeanors and nonviolent crimes.
Cuomo said he’s in favor of eliminating cash bail entirely, but wants to allow judges to have discretion over whether to keep people in custody before their cases are resolved.
The original law was passed to ensure that those who were charged would not sit in jail for extended periods of time due to an inability to pay.
