Big changes this year as REAL ID requirements start in October

The REAL ID change goes into effect on October 1st, but TSA officials are warning residents and travelers alike that they should take care of it before the deadline.

In order to obtain a REAL ID-compliant license, people can head to their local DMV in person and bring documents that prove their U.S. citizenship and New York residency.

“REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the federal government to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver licenses and identification cards across the country,” said Bart Johnson, TSA’s Federal Security Director for upstate New York.

People can tell if they have a REAL ID-compliant license by looking for a star, which will be in the upper right corner of the license.

Your local DMV can provide additional information about acquiring one of these updated licenses.
