What to Eat in Finger Lakes

A beautiful area in New York State, Finger Lakes comes with a very interesting culinary offer, especially for those who are not from around there. If you are a fan of vibrant colors and fresh flavors, then this is the place for you to be.

Before anything else, we’ll start with dessert, given that for many people it’s the most appealing part of the meal. In this region, you can enjoy some excellent grape pie, especially since these tasty fruits are also locally grown. However, they are not the only fruits that deserve your full attention.

Finger Lakes is known for the quality of its apples, and the entire area is a cider-producing hub. However, we will get to that later on. For the moment, it’s good to know that one can eat fresh and tasty fruits and vegetables in this area, with tomatoes, sweet corn, and strawberries being among the favorites.

Let’s get more specific

The area is known for its wines as well, given that there are many vineyards with very nice productions. The trademark wine here is the Riesling, but if you are not a fan of this noble drink, you can also enjoy Port, Pinot Noirs, and Ice Wines here.

In terms of food, salt potatoes are pretty popular and before you think that these are very easy to make and quite common, you should pay a visit and try them out locally. The small and thin-skinned potatoes are usually boiled in salted water and they make a fine side dish for the famous grilled Cornell chicken.

While you are here, you shouldn’t hesitate to try out some fried chickpeas as well, as this is seen by many as the ideal appetizer while you also enjoy some local beer or cocktail. Another aspect that makes the Finger Lakes area a very nice place to visit is the great restaurants that offer authentic and tasty food.

If you are a doctor, you might think about bringing some of the medical equipment with you, such as the one from Opticsandlab, just to make sure that you are prepared for unforeseen circumstances. However, there’s nothing to worry about, as you’ll surely just have a great time here.

Before you leave, don’t forget to try some of the traditional crepes as well, one of the most popular places to do so being at Simply Crepes, which is located in Canandaigua.

A bit about the local cider

Also in the Finger Lakes area you’ll find Ithaca, a very nice city that has become a prominent presence in the cider scene. Cider is highly popular around the world, especially in Europe, and this industry has been silently but steadily growing here as well over the last decades. Today it offers a wide range of ciders, especially since it has the highest density of cideries in New York state.

The fact that you can see 10 such craft cideries within a 30-mile radius says a lot about this activity in the area. Cider-lovers around the country will definitely find everything they want, especially in terms of taste. Besides the high-quality cider production ensured here, there is also extensive research being done by Ithaca’s Cornell University on this beverage.

Young locals who want to pursue this activity as a career can attend undergraduate and graduate programs on the cider-making process. From the local orchards to the cider experiences that one can have in this region, it’s easy to see why many people choose to visit it every year.

You can learn more about the entire process and various types of apples directly from experts, and if cider has been a passion of yours for quite some time, then this region is where you need to plan your next vacation.
