Officials expect to learn more as Gov. Cuomo issues his draft spending plan for 2020

Governor Andrew Cuomo will have to address how he plans to correct a $6 billion budget gap on Tuesday.

The deficit is being fueled by rising Medicaid costs.

Officials with counties around the region are concerned about the potential impact that the new budget might have on their bottom lines.

Some wonder if Governor Cuomo will push some of the cost back onto counties, forcing a reshuffling of local finances.

Advocacy groups around the state are hoping for increased spending on schools, mental health programs, anti-poverty efforts, substance abuse prevention, environmental protections, and infrastructure projects, but it isn’t clear how those will be accommodated while the budget gap grows.

Cuomo did say that he won’t support new taxes to close the budget gap. The next state budget would begin April 1st, 2020.
