Penn Yan man sentenced to 180 days in jail after guilty plea in rape case

A Penn Yan man was sentenced 180 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in Yates County Court.

District Attorney Todd Casella said Travis Vermilye, 25, was arrested after being accused of having sex with a girl less than 17 years old. The sentence carries 10 years of probation, in addition to the jail time.

As part of the deal, other charges – including obstructing governmental administration and criminal possession of a controlled substance were dropped.

Vermilye was arrested by village police in March. He tried to flee, but was taken into custody a short time later.

He will be required to register as a sex offender. A hearing is scheduled for March to determine what level he will be forced to register.
