Priest accused of sexual abuse in lawsuit has ties to several local parishes

A new lawsuit filed under the Child Victims Act asserts that a priest in the Rochester Diocese was moved from church to church in an effort to cover up sexual abuse.

The suit names Rev. Otto Vogt, and alleges that the abuse happened 30 years ago at St. Paul of the Cross Church in Honeoye Falls.

John McHugh says he was 10-years-old in 1989 when he was singled out by Vogt, according to 13WHAM-TV.

The victim was said to have been abused on upwards of 60 different occasions. The abuses are said to have also happened over a four year period.

Rev. Vogt was connected to parishes in Ovid, Ithaca, Elmira, Canisteo, Danville, and Rexville, in addition to the parish in Honeoye Falls.

“They got him out of Dodge. They just shipped him to the next church,” said attorney Mitchell Garabedian to 13WHAM. “Where were the bishops? Why weren’t they protecting innocent children?”
