Congressman John Katko (NY-24) says he supports the U.S. killing of a top Iranian military general.
On Friday, he called it necessary and justified.
A U.S. airstrike in Iraq on Thursday killed Qassam Soleimani, a general of Iran’s elite Quds Force, who the intelligence community says is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans and thousands of others in the Middle East and beyond.
While Rep. Katko said that the strike was justified – he says the U.S. needs to be prepared for a response in some form from Iran.
“With Tehran already vowing forceful revenge, there is no question this action will have consequences and the United States must be prepared,” Katko said in a statement. “We need a decisive strategy and, as a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, I recognize that we must be diligent in our efforts to bolster counterterrorism.”
Katko says the U.S. should remain focused on keeping the country safe from retaliation – not only on the ground in the Middle East and here at home, but from potential cyber attacks against the U.S., as well.
