Officials say an Elmira man who was sentenced to three years in prison for striking a police officer with a vehicle took his own life while incarcerated.

Bill McGinnis, 36, died at Arnot Ogden Medical Center shortly before Christmas – on December 20th.

He was at the Elmira Correctional Facility after being sentenced on a second-degree assault charge, according to Finger Lakes News Radio.

The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries after being struck by McGinnis’ vehicle in November 2018.

The Chemung County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.

Finger Lakes News Radio reports that no additional information about the circumstances of McGinnis’ death were released or available.
