More than $1M to be spent on child care expansion at Tompkins YMCA via economic development grants

Economic development and childcare have overlapped in Tompkins County.

As part of the state’s REDC, or Regional Economic Development Initiative, the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County is going to see funds to expand.

Over the last two weeks, we’ve been detailing the projects and spot-lighting where funds will be spent in the Finger Lakes. More than $64 million had been awarded within the region.

This ‘win’ for Tompkins County includes $1,184,000 to grow through renovation and expansion of their Lansing facility.

“This started several years ago –– our relationship with the Daycare Council was strong enough to realize that there was a need.” YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County CEO Frank Towner told the Ithaca Voice. “So for the past two years we’ve worked as a board and staff leadership to do all we could to fortify the case that this was a necessity.”

Specifica timeline information remains under consideration.
