Democrats, Republicans vying for ground in legislature as 2020 arrives

While Republicans are looking for ways to gain back, and win existing seats in state legislature – after several announced retirements – Democrats are setting new goals for 2020.

Most notably, they are pushing to create a supermajority in the State Senate. They need two more seats, and with those – would be able to override any veto by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Republicans have acknowledged the challenges they face moving forward – after recent retirement announcements from Senators Joe Robach and Rich Funke.

The situation has created a lot of uncertainty as regional leaders from the Finger Lakes look ahead to re-election, and governing in 2020.
