Growing medical bills, four young children, and a home that won’t work
A 40-year-old Sodus man is spending his Christmas in the ICU at Strong Memorial Hospital after a serious multi-car crash in November.
Mike Laird, or ‘Mikey’ as his friends call him, was seriously injured in that wreck on State Route 104. The Sheriff’s Office reported at the time that Laird was waiting to turn into a business – when a car behind him slammed into his vehicle.
The force of that collision caused his vehicle to be sent forward into the oncoming lanes of Route 104. His vehicle was struck twice more by oncoming vehicles.
The Finger Lakes Times reports that Laird is paralyzed from the waist down, and on a ventilator. He had a broken back, and a number of other injuries – including a collapsed lung.
Doctors aren’t optimistic about Laird being able to walk again, according to family, who spoke to the Times about Laird’s condition.
“He really has not shown any improvements,” his sister-in-law told the Times. “He doesn’t have any feeling from the chest down. He can use his arms and his head.”
Laird and his wife, Katie, have triplets, and a five-month-old baby. She was a substitute teacher in the Sodus Central School District, but now is out of work herself. The family is facing serious financial hurdles as they move forward.
The home the couple resides in at the moment will not be sufficient as Laird faces his recovery. A GoFundMe has been started to raise money for the family. Their pending medical bills are nothing short of ‘crushing’ according to the description of the GoFundMe page.
