30% toll increase could be coming for some Thruway travelers

Do you have an E-ZPass?

If not, New York State’s Thruway Board approved a toll increase that could mean a more expensive trip along I-90.

The changes would take effect starting in 2021, after the Thruway transitions to a cashless system. In the end, drivers who do not use the E-ZPass would pay 30 percent more.

The decision isn’t final yet, as a public hearing must be held on the subject, but would officially take place in 2021 after cashless tolling is rolled out throughout the entire state.

The new system will also track vehicles without E-ZPass. The Thruway will mail bills to those drivers. Those who get the bills would also pay a $2 monthly fee.

“We understand any actions we take can have tremendous impacts,” Thruway Commissioner Matt Driscoll said during Thursday’s meeting. Currently NY E-ZPass users get a discount of 5 percent.
