The Yankees officially signed Gerrit Cole to a nine-year contract on Wednesday, introducing him in a news conference at Yankee Stadium. To create room on the 40-man roster, the team designated Chance Adams for assignment.
In introducing Cole, Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke not only of Cole’s talent, but his anticipated clubhouse presence as well.
“We understand what a great talent that Gerrit Cole is,” Boone said. “We understand what a great pitcher he is, and clearly in the prime of his career. But I was blown away by the person … he is going to fit in and add to that [clubhouse], I have no doubts.”
Boone talked about the excitement for him as a manager when he heard the team was going to pursue Cole to the best of its ability.
“As the manager, when I hear when we’re going to be in play for arguably the game’s best pitcher, that’s exciting. Let’s be real about it,” Boone said. “That gets your juices flowing.”
