Future of Cayuga County auto parts factory unclear as company considers closure

Next year could be it for a manufacturing site in Cayuga County.

The future of BCS Automotive is unclear, as its parent company announced that its looking to study its manufacturing footprint. There’s another plant being evaluated. It’s located in Minnesota.

“The study includes the potential transfer of product manufacturing as well as the potential closing of one or more manufacturing sites,” a press release said on Monday.

The Citizen attempted to learn how many employees are at the Cayuga County site, and how they might be impacted. However, their request for more information was not fulfilled by company officials.

“Since the North American automotive market continues to slowdown after the recent record sales years, BCS sees a need to take measures to react on those developments and to align its footprint in accordance with the current and forecasted market situation,” the press release added.

The workers at both facilities are unionized, and company officials said they will work with both through the study process, as they weigh options.

The Citizen reports that TRW became BCS in 2018 when the business was purchased by China-based conglomerate Luxshare Limited from German automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen.
