District Attorney Budelmann, Sen. Helming will hold press conference this week addressing bail reform, vehicular manslaughter case

Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann will hold a news conference this week following a bail hearing for Heriberto Perez-Velasquez.

It’s scheduled for Wednesday.

The 31-year-old is accused of driving drunk in Cayuga County on Route 31 – striking a 59-year-old Weedsport resident, who was operating a tractor alongside the road.

The crash happened in November, and just weeks before – Perez-Velasquez had been released after being charged with DWI in Wayne County.

Questions were raised after the crash, because the Perez-Velasquez was in the U.S. illegally when the traffic stop happened in Wayne County.

In Cayuga County Perez-Velasquez was charged with vehicular manslaughter, DWI, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash and failure to use a designated lane.

The victim of the crash, Mark Knapp, was remembered by the community in the days and weeks that followed the crash.

As for the press conference, Sen. Pam Helming (R-54) is expected to be in attendance.

District Attorney Budelmann says bail-reform laws are partially to blame for the circumstances.

The press conference is expected to begin around 2:30 p.m. in the Cayuga County Legislature Chambers, located on the 6th Floor of the Cayuga County Office Building, 160 Genesee Street, Auburn.
