Researchers at FAIR Health looked at over 29 billion private healthcare claim records from 2007 to 2018. They found diagnoses of Lyme disease increased nationally 117 percent during that period.
New York was among the 10 states with the highest percentages of insurance claims for Lyme, according to the report from FAIR Health. The independent nonprofit collects data for and manages the nation’s largest database of privately billed health insurance claims.
Canandaigua resident John Messina said he’s not surprised at the data. Messina battles complications of Lyme disease and advocates for victims. That includes an ongoing campaign to require health insurers to cover treatment for Lyme.
