Steuben County man accused of murder dies by suicide

The group home employee accused of killing a resident in his care has died by suicide.

Deputies say Alan Schultheis died on Friday, Nov. 22 in Steuben County Jail. According to the Evening Tribune, the 64-year-old jumped from a second-floor area inside the jail.

Police say he admitted to stabbing 60-year-old Jay Sprague in the neck with a knife at an Arc of Steuben home in Hornell on Nov. 4.

Schultheis, who appeared in court for a preliminary hearing earlier Friday, was in charge of supervising the residents.
