Senator Chuck Schumer is calling for urgent action to help head off a new round of flooding on Lake Ontario.
Schumer released a letter to the administrators of the Saint Lawrence River on Saturday. The letter urges seaway administrators to launch safety measures for ships on the river so that more water can be let out through the Moses Saunders Dam to bring lake levels down.
Lake Ontario is now more than a foot and a half higher than normal for this time of the year. Schumer’s office says another round of flooding and damage for lakeshore communities is likely if levels aren’t brought down by the spring.
