Despite facing a proposed 9.5 percent tax levy increase and 10.91 percent tax rate increase next year, only one person from the community spoke at a City Council public hearing on the budget Thursday night.
The proposed $15,848,979 spending plan for 2020 carries a 3.43 percent increase over the current plan.
The spending increase itself is “fairly modest,” Councilmember Jim Terwilliger said Thursday night.
A decline in overall assessments, which helped cause the tax increase, is driven largely by two factors: a roughly $7 million decline in the former Inn on the Lake’s assessment after its demolition to make way for the new-look Lake House on Canandaigua next year, and a medical group building’s tax-exempt status after joining UR Medicine Thompson Health, Terwilliger said.
