The 2019-20 season started with a thud for the Syracuse basketball team.
Or was that a clang? Like the sound of a shot clanking off the rim.
Syracuse opened the season on Wednesday night against the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers and their vaunted pack-line defense.
Virginia’s defense completely shut down the Orange as Syracuse fell 48-34 in its first game of the regular season in front of a crowd of 22,518 at the Carrier Dome. It marked Syracuse’s first season-opening loss since the 2003-04 season.
