Woman barricades herself inside apartment, jumps from second story window to evade officers

Police say a Spencer woman wasn’t seriously hurt after she jumped from a second story window to evade police.

Katie Pelto, 37, of Spencer was taken into custody on Thursday after the incident, which began as a standoff.

A warrant had been issued for her arrest in Tioga County for failing to comply with the terms of her probation for a criminal contempt charge.

A request was made this week by the Tioga County Probation Office that the Penn Yan Police Department assist in the matter and execute a warrant, which was locally endorsed.

When police arrived at the residence on Maiden Lane, Pelto barricaded herself in the apartment, refusing to comply with police requests.

After negotiations, police made forcible entry into the apartment by breaching the door. At that point, police say that Pelto tried to flee by jumping from a second story window.

Officers waiting below assisted in breaking her fall and Pelto was taken into custody without further incident. She suffered only minor injuries from the fall and was treated by Penn Yan Ambulance.

Pelto was subsequently turned over to the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office for arraignment on the warrant.

The Penn Yan Police Department was assisted by a New York State DEC officer, deputies with the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, and the Penn Yan Volunteer Ambulance company.
