Ontario County covers landfill developments

More gas wells in the ground, a drone overhead and a permit request over tanks taking leachate — those are a few developments at the Ontario County landfill that are on the agenda at Thursday’s meeting of the county Board of Supervisors.

A public hearing will take up the matter of amending a landfill permit regarding leachate — that liquid that drains or “leaches” from degrading landfill waste. The permit change requested of the state Department of Environmental Conservation would allow installation of two additional storage tanks for holding leachate.

The tanks are used instead of a lagoon, said Canadice Town Supervisor Kris Singer, chairwoman of the board’s Planning and Environmental Quality Committee.
