Add John Wallace to the list of former Syracuse basketball players to have their numbers retired.
The school announced today that it will honor Wallace’s No. 44 on Feb. 29 in the Carrier Dome, when the Orange plays North Carolina. Wallace, one of the program’s most versatile performers, led the Orange to the 1996 title game. His 3-point shot in a tightly-fought Sweet 16 game against Georgia sealed it for SU and sent the team to the Final Four. The game coined the phrase “’Cuse is in the House,” which became something of a rallying cry that season.
Wallace averaged 22.2 points and 8.7 rebounds that season. He finished his career ranked third in program history in points (2,119) and third in rebounds (1,065). The New York Knicks made him the 18th pick of the 1996 NBA Draft.
