Should snow days be re-defined as “learn from home” days?

Heavy snow in Central New York often means a snow day for kids to go sledding, hang out with friends, or just relax.

However, Peoria public schools in Illinois are re-defining the snow day, preparing special homework assignments meant for snow days.

The schools call it Snow Day E-Learning, or “learn from home” days. The policy was used last winter and approved again for this year.

CNYCentral reached out to local school districts to see if they would consider a similar policy.

In the winter, it’s Central Square Superintendent Tom Colabufo’s job to decide whether to call a snow day.

“When I first heard of it I’m kind of against it, I think that we have so much on our students and our teachers that when they get those rare snow days I kind of think it’s an opportunity for them to relax and unwind that I think is really important,” Colabufo explains.
