Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples Day or both?
Both Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and Native Americans will be celebrated Monday in Monroe County by different groups.
In a milestone change, the city of Rochester celebrated its first Indigenous Peoples Day last year. But the city also noted the holiday is the federally designated Columbus Day, as it has “traditionally been an important way for Rochester’s large Italian American community to celebrate their heritage and contributions to our area.”
More than 600 people will gather at the Diplomat Banquet Center in Gates for the 79th annual Columbus Day luncheon to hear from local Italian American dignitaries about their ancestral roots. A flag-raising ceremony will be held at 11:15 a.m., followed by the luncheon at noon.
