A wanted man who had been on the run from authorities in Ontario County for 45 days was captured in Canada – after he stole a boat to flee the country illegally.
The ordeal was outlined in an update from the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.
Joseph Dileo, 46, was arrested on a warrant outside of Ontario County. Deputies said that he was wanted on two counts of grand larceny, three counts of falsifying business records, and one count of filing a false instrument for filing, as well as one count of scheme to defraud.
Deputies say that Dileo had been on the run for 45 days; and that in that time – he took a friends’ car, drove it to Ogdensurg, and used a stolen boat to cross into Canada illegally.
Canadian authorities eventually arrested Dileo. He was released to New York State Police, who charged him with grand larceny for allegedly stealing the boat. He was processed in the town of Hammond, located approximately 40 miles north of Watertown.
He’s now in custody of the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and will face charges there.
