When Ito Aghayere was growing up, her father — a civil engineer, college professor and Nigerian immigrant — made it clear there were five professions that would provide her and her siblings with solid futures: medicine, law, accounting, engineering, academia.
That was it.
Success, stability, self-sufficiency. Aghayere’s dad and mom achieved those things after leaving West Africa for more education and better opportunities in Canada and the United States.
“My parents wanted that for us, too,” said Aghayere, who was born in Alberta and lived with her family in Toronto before her father accepted a teaching position at Rochester Institute of Technology and the family relocated to the Rochester area when she was 10.
