After reports of numerous altercations at the Elmira Correctional Facility in 2019, two inmates were injured this week in another incident at the prison.
The latest incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday during evening recreation in the gym yard, according to the union that represents corrections officers.
Officers assigned to the yard observed four inmates exchanging punches with one inmate, according to the New York State Correctional Officers Police Benevolent Association.
The officers gave the inmates several direct orders to stop fighting. The inmates eventually complied and stopped, the union said.
Four inmates got on the ground and one inmate placed his hands on the fence. As staff were securing the inmates, one jumped from the ground and charged another who was also on the ground, according to union accounts.
