Starting Oct. 1, the majority of criminal cases involving 17-year-olds in New York state will be heard in family court.
It’s part of the final phase of the Raise of the Age law.
The measure was signed back in 2017. In the first phase, 16-year-olds couldn’t be charged as adults.
Back in August, the Raise the Age Implementation Task Force approved the final phase of adding 17-year-olds to the law.
