Excavator strikes gas line at car wash under construction in Seneca Falls

On Tuesday at 11:09 a.m. the Seneca County 911 Center received a 911 call from Hoover Construction, contractors working at the Classy Chassy Car Wash at the Liberty Plaza.

Police say the caller stated that an excavator hit an underground gas line and it was actively blowing natural gas into the air.

The Town of Seneca Falls Police Department responded to the scene along with the Seneca Falls Fire Department.

The east side of the plaza parking lot and the State Route 5 entrance was closed for the duration of the event. New York State Electric & Gas crews arrived quickly and were able to control the leak.

It was determined that the severed line was a smaller service line to the car wash, not a larger main line.

Once under control the scene was turned over to NYSEG to complete the repair.

Authorities were on scene determining if the proper protocol was followed as required by law in the State of New York, and if the contractors made proper notification prior to digging.

No injuries were reported.
