The votes have been tallied and the choice has been made for the new design for New York’s latest license plates.
The design will be “Number 5” – the design with Niagara Falls, New York City skyline, and the Statue of Liberty pictured. The DMV announced Friday afternoon, thanking everyone who participated in the survey. Voting finished on September 2 for the five designs.
The voting results for each design was as follows:
- 16.0%
- 9.7%
- 9.7%
- 14.9%
- 49.7%

Now that the design has been chosen, the current “Empire Gold” plates will be phased out and printed in April 2020. Drivers renewing their vehicle registrations will have a $25 plate replacement fee added to the cost of the registration renewal.
Customers can keep their current license plate number for an additional $20 fee.
