Across the country, number of students taking part in contact sports declines

High school athletes are back on the field across the area.

In Fairport, Kelly and Mike Giambrone were watching their daughter play soccer Tuesday. She is on the varsity team for Fairport. Sports have always been a part of the family’s DNA.

“I think sports, in general, is just a great avenue for kids to learn all the values in life,” said Mike Giambrone.

But, in the past few years, they say they’ve noticed changes.

“I definitely think there is a bigger emphasis on injuries, concussions, ACL injuries – stuff like that,” said Kelly Giambrone.

Their son, Nick, played hockey in high school and suffered a concussion.
