BOIL WATER ORDER: Residents instructed to boil water in parts of Varick, Fayette

Officials in Seneca County have issued a Boil Water Order for users of Seneca County Water District #1, Varick Water District #3, and Fayette Water District #5.

“Bring tap water to a rolling boil, boil for one minute, and cool before using,” emergency management officials said in a press release. “Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food until further notice.”

Officials say the three districts are in the northern portion of the Former Seneca Army Depot, and run along Route 336 and State Route 414.

A water main break resulted in the Boil Water Order, which was discovered around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday when the water system lost pressure. “When water mains lose pressure it increases the chance that untreated water and harmful microbes can enter your water,” officials said in a statement.

Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms and may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. But these symptoms are not just caused by microbes in drinking water.

Anyone experiences any of these symptoms should seek medical advice.
