By April 2020, your license plate could look very different.
The state is planning for a new design, but what it looks like is in your hands. You can vote online, choosing from five designs.
The Governor’s office says plates are changing because some of the older ones are getting hard to read for law enforcement. They can also cause problems with cashless tolls and red light cameras.
Once one of these new designs is in production, the Department of Motor Vehicles will stop issuing the Empire Gold plates. The plate replacement program will happen while drivers register their vehicles over the next two years.
The $25 license plate replacement fee will be added to the cost of your registration. You have until Monday, September 2nd to cast your vote.
