It’s almost time to send kids back to school, and parents are busy shopping for supplies. But some aren’t just grabbing pens and notebooks. In some places, bullet resistant backpacks might be added to the list.
With recent mass shootings around the country, there is a major concern when it comes to safety. Scott Hare is the Vice President of Operations at Armoured One, an active shooter training and security assessment company. He says, “We can’t plan when these things happen. We can guarantee that we won’t know when it’s going to happen.”
While that might be true, some parents are trying to prepare as best they can by buying kids bullet-resistant backpacks. Several manufacturers say they have seen a spike in sales for these products after the recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. For some parents like Kirston Rooney in Dewitt, these backpacks give them a peace of mind. She says, “At the end of the day if my children are more safe, then I’m all for it.”
But Carol Baxter of Baldwinsville disagrees. She says, “I just think it’s sad that it comes to this. That the best answer that we have is to arm our children to protect our children. This country is full of bright and smart people, we have endless resources, and we have a lot of money. We can solve this problem if we really want to.”
