Syracuse football opened training camp last Friday without coach Dino Babers present to lead the team through its first practice of the preseason.
Babers, it turns out, had a good reason to skip the opening day of camp.
He flew out to California to surprise his mother, Patsy Ann, on her 80th birthday.
