The Onondaga and Oneida County Sheriff’s Departments have sent a total of 17 local kids to the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute Summer Camp.
Now in its 43rd year of operation, the camp accommodates more than 900 boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 from across New York State, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department. The campers attend at no charge.
Onondaga County Sheriff Eugene Conway said the department sent 7 children. Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol said his department sent 10 children.
The sheriff’s departments said campers participate in typical camp activities such as archery, sailing, boating, hiking, and talent shows. They also experience technical and safety demonstrations by deputy sheriffs such as scuba diving, K-9 handling, bicycle safety and boating safety.
