The Wegmans in Ithaca started their plastic bag ban today after announcing a week ago that this ban would be put into effect. This is the first Wegmans in New York State to get rid of plastic altogether before the full ban goes into effect in March 2020.
For the Ithaca community, it’s not something new. Many people already have reusable bags.
Deserie Quinones has been living in Ithaca for five years. She’s very excited.
“I think it’s fantastic. Everybody needs to do everything they can – corporations, people, individuals, companies, and organizations,” says Quinones.
Laurene Gilbert also isn’t surprised. She’s been using her own bags for ten years.
“It always broke my heart when I checked out and saw all of those plastic bags going into those carts,” says Gilbert.
