Felony charges filed after child abandoned at Penn Yan hospital

Police say a Dundee man was arrested on child abandonment charges following a daylong investigation at a local hospital.

Steven Roy Wingate, 36, of Dundee was charged on Sunday following an incident that morning at Soldiers & Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan.

Wingate engaged in a domestic incident with a child at the hospital and subsequently left the child behind. Further investigation revealed that Wingate had deserted the child with the intent to abandon them, according to police.

Wingate refused to return and take custody of the child after police intervention. An arrest warrant was issued from Penn Yan Village Court and Wingate was taken into custody at his residence.

He was charged with child abandonment, a felony; and endangering the welfare of a child. Wingate was held pending arraignment.
