Six-year-old twins Alec and Seth Potter buckled up their life vests before launching their kayaks on Canandaigua Lake Saturday.
Their big brother Luke, 11, knows the importance of staying safe on the water.
“A lot of people when they flip out of boats, some of them get scared and they’ll start freaking out, but you just got to stay calm,” said Luke.
Staying calm and getting back in the boat is a lesson their father Chad said he taught them along with instilling other safety tips.
“It’s all about basic safety with making sure you have your equipment with you, your life preservers, making sure you got all your paddles properly together,” said Potter, a Victor resident.
Fourth of July weekend is a busy time for boaters. The activity can be dangerous. In 2016, there were 22 boating fatalities in the state.
Mark Greenfeld of Victor has been boating for 30 years.
