State Police crackdown aims to prevent drunk driving over July 4th holiday

State Police are asking drivers to make responsible decisions if they plan on drinking this holiday weekend.

A special detail, which will include an increased number of patrols and checkpoints, went into effect last week and will continue through Friday.

More than 200 people were arrested for DWI last year during the Fourth of July weekend, while about 10,500 tickets were issued.

Troopers encourage drivers to utilize the Have a Plan app to make sure they stay safe this holiday weekend.

“Troopers will be out in force this holiday weekend and will be on the lookout for impaired, distracted and reckless motorists who put others in danger,” NYSP Superintendent Keith Corlett said in a statement. “Our message is simple. Don’t drink and drive! Help prevent senseless tragedies caused by impaired driving. Stay safe, and don’t make a fatal decision that costs your life or someone else’s.”
