Leah Hamilton spent the past six years transforming the Phelps Library into something much bigger than just a building that holds books and reference materials.
She engineered the development of the STEAM Lab Makerspace, a program that allowed the library to become even more important to the community.
Hamilton, the executive director of the Phelps Library, is leaving to take a new job. Her last day is Aug. 31.
Her desire to provide targeted educational experiences aimed at addressing a gap in technical skills motivated her to create STEAM Lab Makerspace — STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math.
“Many times we, as a society, engage in repeating behaviors and following known pathways only because that is what has always been done, until those behaviors become our ingrained culture,” she said. “Even though it may not be working, we continue along those paths never knowing the other options through which we might find success and fulfillment.”
